Lots of people like shopping, but very few enjoy spending money. While there are ways to save money while you shop, like hunting for sales or using coupons, those strategies can require some patience and extra effort.

Dosh is an app that rewards you when you shop, helping you save money with little effort when you shop at certain stores.

What is Dosh?

Dosh is a phone app that rewards people when they shop. The company partners with different stores to offer rewards. Those stores pay Dosh for referring customers and Dosh passes some of that payment on to you.

When you shop at a Dosh partner, you can get a cash back reward with no extra effort.

How Does Dosh Work?

Using Dosh involves an easy, three-step process.

Link Your Cards

Once you download the Dosh app and create an account, the first thing you’ll have to do is link your credit and debit cards.

Adding a card is as easy as giving Dosh your card number. Dosh uses state-of-the-art security measures to keep your card information safe. There’s also no cost to the service, so you don’t have to worry about Dosh charging your card.

Dosh only uses your card number to track your purchases, which it uses to reward you when you shop with a partner.

Shop with Dosh Partners

Dosh has hundreds of partners that let you earn rewards while shopping. In the Dosh app, you’ll see four main categories.

The first category of offers is mobile offers. You can visit these companies’ websites directly through the Dosh app. Do your shopping through the app and you’ll automatically earn the stated rewards. For example, you might get 2% cashback on orders from Macy’s or $5 back on your first order from DoorDash.

The second category is online offers. These are rewards you can earn when you use one of your linked cards to shop online. It doesn’t matter whether you shop through the app or through another web browser.

Finally, you’ll see local offers. You can give the Dosh app access to your location and Dosh will use that information to populate this list. Many local restaurants and retailers partner with Dosh to offer cashback rewards. You can earn rewards when you shop at one of these stores or order delivery, takeout, or sit-down service from local restaurants. You can even look at a convenient map to see where the retailers are located.

Dosh also has a travel rewards category. You can book hotel stays directly through the Dosh app to earn cashback on your stays.

Cash Out

Dosh does not pay rewards directly to users’ bank accounts. When you earn rewards Dosh adds them to your Dosh wallet. You can view your wallet balance at any time.

One of Dosh’s biggest drawbacks is that there is a $25 minimum to cash out your wallet balance. If you don’t have the minimum amount, there’s no way to access your earnings. This means Dosh is only useful if you expect to earn at least $25 in rewards.

On the bright side, rewards don’t expire, so you can take your time in earning the $25 minimum.

How Does Dosh Pay Its Users?

Dosh offers two options for getting paid.

One option is a deposit to the bank account or PayPal account of your choice. When you accumulate $25 or more in your Dosh wallet, you can request a payment and Dosh will send the money to your account. You can then use the money however you’d wish.

The second option is to donate money to charity in your name. If you like one of the charities that Dosh partners with, you can ask the company to send your wallet balance directly to that charity. Keep in mind that there is still the $25 cash out minimum to use this option.

Dosh does occasionally offer a signup bonus to new users. Typically, the bonus is only a dollar or two, so it’s usually not worth waiting for a bonus offer to sign up. Users can also earn a bonus for referring friends to the app.

Dosh offers ongoing promotions, increasing the cashback that certain stores offer or adding new stores for a short period. For example, Dosh might add a popular merchant like Walmart, Dunkin, or Uber Eats for a week. As long as you use a linked card, you’ll earn rewards at purchases from these merchants automatically.

Keeping an eye out for these promotions is a great way to rack up the rewards because you can make larger purchases during the promotion periods.

Pricing and Fees

One of the best parts of Dosh is that there’s no cost to use it. You can download the app and sign up for free. You do have to provide your card information so the app can track your purchases, but Dosh never charges your cards.

There are also no fees to cash out of the app. If you cash out $25 from your Dosh wallet you’ll get exactly $25 deposited to your bank account or your PayPal account.

Signing Up

Signing up for Dosh is pretty simple.

The first thing to do is download the Dosh app, which you can get from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Once you install the app, you’ll have to create an account. This involves giving the app your mobile number and creating a password. You’ll have to confirm the number you enter, so make sure to use a real phone number when signing up.

The third and final step is linking your credit and debit cards. You can link as many cards as you want, but you have to link at least one card to be able to earn rewards with Dosh.

For Dosh to work, you have to give your credit card information to the app. While Dosh won’t charge your card, it’s understandable to be somewhat concerned about giving an app your card information.

If someone managed to take your card information, they might be able to make purchases without your authorization, which could leave you with damaged credit and having to pay the bills.

Dosh states that security is one of its priorities. The company uses bank-level security and encryption software to keep your personal information and card information safe. The company does not store any of your personal data, such as your name, address, or card information on its servers. It also encrypts all transaction information for purchases that occur through the app.

Mobile Support

Dosh is a purely mobile app. You can’t sign up and use Dosh from a computer, so you have to use the app if you want to earn rewards through Dosh.

The good news is that Dosh’s mobile application is well-designed and easy to use. You can quickly view the different merchants offering rewards, check your rewards balance, or link new cards.

Support/Customer Service

Dosh offers basic customer service and support to its users. It has a help portal that has answers to dozens of frequently asked questions. If you can’t get an answer to your question through the help portal, you can open a support ticket with Dosh’s customer service team.

The customer support team works from 9 AM to 5 PM, Central Time, during weekdays. All support requests are submitted through a web form, so you’ll have to wait for Dosh to get back to you with assistance. There isn’t a live chat or option to call for support.

Pros and Cons

  • Free to use — Dosh doesn’t charge customers anything for its service, so there’s no risk in trying to app.
  • Rewards stack with credit card rewards — You earn cash back in the Dosh app separately from your credit card’s rewards, giving you the chance to double-dip.
  • Promotions — Dosh sometimes adds rewards for popular merchants like Walmart or Uber Eats. These offer a great opportunity to earn lots of rewards.
  • Rewards don’t expire — You can leave your rewards in your account for as long as you’d like without worrying about them expiring.

  • $25 cash out minimum — You have to earn at least $25 before you can cash out, which might make it hard to actually get the cash back you’ve earned.
  • Security concerns — Dosh uses high-level security software to keep your information safe, but you are letting the app track your purchases, so someone may be able to take information about your shopping patterns.
  • No guarantee of good offers — Dosh only offers cash back when you shop with a partner or take advantage of an offer in the app. If you don’t regularly shop with any Dosh partners, you might not earn any rewards.

There are plenty of similar apps that might be a better choice for you than Dosh.

Like Dosh, Ibotta is an app that rewards you when you shop. Where it differs is that Ibotta looks for purchases of specific products rather than purchases at specific stores.

For example, Ibotta may give you an offer to earn $.25 on a purchase of a certain brand of soda.

If there aren’t a lot of Dosh partners near you, or you want to earn some extra cash back on staple products like groceries, Ibotta can be a good alternative to Dosh.

Drop is similar to Dosh in that it rewards you for shopping at certain stores.

When you sign up for Drop, you can link your cards and select a few of your favorite stores. When you shop at these stores, or other stores that appear in the app’s offers, you’ll earn Drop points based on the amount that you spend.

Unlike Dosh, Drop has a $5 redemption minimum, which means you should be able to redeem your rewards sooner with Drop than Dosh. However, Drop only lets you redeem your rewards for gift cards rather than cash.

Rakuten (formerly Ebates) is one of the largest cashback websites and apps on the market. It’s best known for its online shopping portal which lets you earn cash back on purchases you make over the internet. All you have to do is visit Rakuten’s site, click through to the merchant of your choice, and shop like normal. You’ll automatically earn cash back rewards.

You can also link your credit and debit cards to take advantage of in-store offers. You can see the stores that Rakuten partners with on its website or through the app. Like Dosh, you’ll earn cash back when you use your linked cards to shop in partner stores.

Raktuen sends out checks quarterly to everyone who earned at least $5 in rewards. You can also have Rakuten deposit the money to your PayPal account instead of sending a check. If you earned less than $5, your balance carries over to the next quarter.

These are some of people’s most frequently asked questions about Dosh.

Stores are always looking for ways to advertise and get more customers through their doors. They’ll often offer commissions to other companies that can refer customers. For example, Nike might be willing to give Dosh 5% of any transactions that happen because of a customer Dosh referred to its stores. Dosh takes the 5% commission it receives, keeps some of it, and gives the rest of it to its user as a cash back reward. This lets Dosh earn money and reward its users.
How much you make with Dosh depends on how much money you spend at partner stores. Typically, you’ll earn between 1% and 5% of the amount spent, depending on the store you’re shopping at.
The stores that Dosh partners with to offer rewards change regularly. Large stores like Amazon and Walmart may appear in the app, but usually do so infrequently or not at all. Given that Dosh is free to sign up for, there’s no risk to signing up and seeing if it has any offers for rewards at stores you frequently shop at. The offers change regularly, so you can also check back to see what merchants it adds to the list and which get removed.

Who is Dosh For?

Dosh is free to use, so it’s a great app for almost anyone to install.

Because Dosh rewards people for shopping at certain stores, the people who will get the most out of it are those who do a lot of shopping. This can be shopping for necessities at big box stores or shopping for entertainment. Either way, you might be able to earn some rewards with Dosh.

Bottom Line

Dosh is a solid app for people who want to earn extra rewards when they shop. The fact that it’s free and that all you have to do is link a credit card or two means that there’s little reason for people not to give the app a try.

The only major drawback is that you have to earn $25 before you’re free to cash out. Some people may prefer to use an alternative with a lower cash out minimum.
