I’ve also struggled with credit card debt. At one point my wife and I had 5 figures to pay off. We managed to do it, and we learned a lot in the process.
I’ve taken both of these experiences to create content for the credit card section of this site. The content includes both lists of the best credit cards for those looking to take advantage of rewards. It also includes extensive content on how to get out of credit card debt.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express – If you find yourself buying a lot of groceries for the family or driving hundreds of miles a week for work, this is your credit card. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express rewards cardholders with 6% cash back at the supermarket (up to $6,000 spent annually), 3% cash back at the pump and 1% cash back everywhere else.
They’ve also added a few new bonus categories; 6% cash back on select US streaming services (like Netflix, Hulu and others) and 3% cash back on ground transportation.
For newly approved applicants, you’ll earn a $250 bonus after spending $1,000 in purchases during the first three months. That bonus more than offsets the $95 annual fee. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express also includes a lot of extra benefits like extended warranties, purchase protection, and concierge service.
The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card takes a simple approach to cash back rewards. You earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase. There is a $0 annual fee.
- Everyday Rewards: 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
- Bonus Rewards: One-time $150 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months of approval.
- Annual Fee: $0 annual fee.
- Extra Features: 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, then an ongoing APR of 15.49% - 25.49% (Variable).
Bottom Line: It pays a top cash back percentage which, along with a potential cash bonus and no annual fee, makes it a solid choice.
The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is Capital One’s premier travel rewards credit card.
This is the card with the most memorable commercials, but it’s also one of the best travel cards around today. It’s most valuable if you use the benefits for travel, when the miles are worth more. Here are the details:
- Everyday Rewards: Earn unlimited 2X miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.
- Bonus Rewards: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 50,000 miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months of approval, equal to $500 in travel.
- Annual Fee: $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.
- Extra Features: No foreign transaction fees.
Bottom Line: For frequent fliers, this card is a great option. The rewards aren’t worth as much if you cash them in on non-travel expenses, though, so keep that in mind. Also, remember that you’ll have to spend enough to out-earn that $95 annual fee in order to make this card worth your while. You’ll have to spend around $5,000 a year to break even with the annual fee.
