As banks continue to increase the amount of fees charged to the consumer, especially when it comes to checking accounts, it’s nice to see a bank that still provides the service for free, with an interest rate as a bonus.  FNBO Direct, one of the most well known and respected banking institutions in the US, offers an Online BillPay feature, similar to any online checking account.

The FNBO Direct Online BillPay Account includes a debit card, which is branded with the Visa logo and accepted everywhere Visa is accepted.  The FNBO Visa® Check Card can be used on everyday purchases and at more than 840,000 ATM’s across the country.  There is an ATM associated if it is not owned by FNBO, however if the account holder maintains a balance of at least $25,000, the first four foreign ATM fees are waived each and every month.

Unlike many brick and mortar checking accounts, FNBO and it’s Online BillPay Account is so streamlined, that it allows for an interest rate of 0.65% APY on your money.  This rate is always fluctuating, but when it’s compared to other online checking accounts, it will always land in the top tier.  If you need to add extra account holders or request statements, that can be taken care of online, free of charge.  Remember though, this is an online BillPay Account and it does not include overdraft protection.

Signing up for an FNBO Direct Online BillPay Account

If you are already an FNBO Direct account holder, you need not sign up for an independent BillPay Account.  Simply log-in to your account and select the Online BillPay feature.  However, for those new to FNBO, the process of signing up for an account is simple.  There are five total steps to signing up, and none of them take more than 60 seconds to complete.  Make sure you take your time however, because any inaccurate information could cause the application to be denied.

When completed, you’ll be provided your account details and log-in information, and your FNBO Direct Visa Check card will arrive in the mail within 7 days.  Like with any debit card, you will be required to generate a PIN number, that should be kept secret.  Debit card transactions are generally not covered during fraud, so birthdays and anniversaries are out.

FNBO Direct POPMoney Tool

POPMoney is a feature unique to FNBO Direct and it allows users to pay each other in a quick an easy manner.  FNBO Direct created a neat little visual to help explain just how POPMoney works:

This feature, while still unique to FNBO, is slightly outdated now that banks like ING Direct and Chase have created quick payment methods for free.  The cost for making an ACH transfer is $2 and it takes up to 3 business days to complete.  The minimum amount is $10, the maximum is $1,000 and each month, there is a $5,000 limit that can be sent.  POPMoney can be used to pay anyone, and if the other party does not have a POPMoney account, they need to provide a small amount of information to receive the funds.

Pros and Cons

  • High Interest Rate for BillPay
  • No Monthly Fees
  • No Minimum Balance

Bottom Line

The FNBO Direct Online BillPay Account is a great way to make payments on your bills, while receiving a highly competitive interest rate in the process.  FNBO Direct is one of the most well respected banks in the industry and you never have to worry about the safety of your money, as it’s always FDIC insured.  To take the next step and sign-up for an Online BillPay Account, visit the secure FNBO application page using any link found in this post.
