It is possible to live without a credit card, we've been doing it for the past year when we started a debt relief program. The only thing that is really difficult is when you have to rent a car. My husband works out of town and has to rent them frequently. You have to use a debit card and they hold a substantial amount, $250-$300 until the car is returned, and then it's returned to your bank account. So as this is annoying, it can be done. Just takes more money and planning to do it. But not having a credit card in general ends up saving you so much in the long run.

Do you think it's possible to get by without a credit card? Or would you substitute the credit card for a debit card?

I agree with the couponing. DO NOT copy coupons. It is illegal, and stores will gradually make restrictions to the point of not accepting them at all if there is a trend of coupon fraud.

I like to stack coupons whenever I can. This is when you use one store-specific coupon with one manufacturer's coupon. Also, there are ways to use BOGO coupons for extra savings (this can be difficult to explain, but there are right ways and wrong ways to use BOGO coupons). And if a certain item is on sale and it's a smaller size than what you would normally get, they actually can work to your advantage. I was able to stockpile on Dawn dishwashing detergent as CVS when they had a 10/$10 sale, using coupons and ECBs. That shopping trip, I spent $2 on all my merchandise that would have cost me $40!

Save 10% of all money you earn.or receive etc..in a bank account with a daily interest preferable (you receive more interest this way}.. Transfer money to treasury bills or high yeilding secured investments when finds are at appropriate level. Do not use this money for any thing like purchsse of car, house or furniture. This is your retirement fund. You will be surprised how much is saved if you start this plan as soon as start working. will be a very tidy sum.

I hate to nag about anything on this otherwise superb site/list, but Henry Ford did not invent the automobile, unfortunately. Benz and Daimler of Germany are the ones to credit.

About 31.: do NOT copy printable coupons. They each have a unique code (not the bar code that the store scans, it's smaller and higher up on the coupon) and if you use copies, the store will only get reimbursed for the first one (it's in the terms on the coupon that it should not be copied). This leads to stores stopping accepting printable coupons. If you want more than the two copies the site lets you print, you can always find a different computer to print more, each with its own code.

Here are a few more:

Not for everyone, but see if there's a liquidation grocery store (otherwise known as "the dented can store") near you. A lot of their goods are dented or expired, but a lot aren't. You have to be willing to sift through, but we get great stuff cheap every time we go, including organic food we'd never be able to afford otherwise.

Use textured vegetable protein (made from soybeans) instead of ground meat in chili, sloppy joes, etc. Or mix it 50-50 with meat. We don't eat meat anyway, but I've read many people who've said their meat-eating families couldn't tell the difference. TVP is lower in fat and much cheaper than meat. You can buy it dry in the bulk section of Whole Foods or another health food store. Just reconstitute it with water or broth when you're ready to use it.

For health and beauty items, CVS has free items each week and each month with their Extra Bucks program, and Walgreens and Rite Aid have rebate programs with more free items. CVS is a bit more work since the Extra Bucks expire (you can use them to buy more Extra Buck items though!), but Walgreens and Rite Aid's programs are simple--type in the receipt info on their website and they'll send you a check (in Walgreens's case, you can also opt for a Walgreens gift card with a 10% bonus on all your rebates). If you keep up with these, you'll never pay for shampoo, conditioner, or toothpaste again.
