I’ve been tagged, and it isn’t pretty. Cruising through my RSS feed today I noticed that Plonkee Money tagged me with something called a MOMA meme. Naturally, I starting running in circles shouting, “Get it off, get it off!” My family just stared at me, so I sat back down and fired up my good friend, Mr. Google. It turns out that a meme, according to the infallible source of all known and knowable knowledge, Wikipedia, comprises
a unit of cultural information, cultural evolution or diffusion that propagates from one mind to another analogously to the way in which a gene propagates from one organism to another as a unit of genetic information and of biological evolution. Multiple memes may propagate as cooperative groups called memeplexes (meme complexes).
In other words, its a modern version of the “pass it on game” we use to play in elementary school. You know, the teacher whispers in Suzie’s ear “Dogs make good pets,” and by the time it gets to Bobby at the end of the line, it comes out, “Suzie eats dog food.”
And the MOMA part of MOMA meme stands for My One Money Advice, according to Moolanomy who started all this fuss. Plonkee’s sage advice was to “Know yourself,” so after the introductions were over, I gave some thought to what my one money advice would be. Drum roll please. . .My One Money Advice is
Live below your means.
The ability to live below your means demonstrates self-control and discipline. It shows that you can control your money, rather than your money controlling you. It enables you to save and invest for your future and your family’s future. It brings stability and balance to your life. It simplifies your life and enables you to make choices based on your dreams rather than your debt. In the words of Samuel Johnson,
Without frugality none can be rich, and with it very few would be poor.
Of course, I may be full of hot air and Publilius Syrus (1st Century B.C. Roman author) could be right after all: “Frugality is misery in disguise.”
In honor of my fifth grade teacher who loved the Pass It On Game, I now tag three of my favorite PF bloggers:
