Pinyo, I was making a lot more money at the time I joined the club than I make today. I took a huge pay cut to spend more time with my family. Maybe the story is worth a separate post.

Holy smoke! $60,000? That's a rich-man-club. I think I have to save a decade to get that much money.

Interesting post. Bravo to you for being able to stand back and look at your bad financial moves honestly. Most people just shrug their shoulders and keep doing the same dumb stuff.

Plonkee, I'm still not sure what prompted me to join the country club, other than memories of my father. As for my wife, since we were both broke when we got married, money was the last thing on our minds!

Did you not feel a little sick when you started writing the check for $60K?

I'm not sure that your wife should be impressed that you married her for her money [management skills]. ;)

Lynnae, it is amazing how our childhood experiences can impact our financial decisions as adults. In my family growing up, we went from one financial crisis to another. I lived most of my teenage years in fear of losing our home and working summers to keep the family business (which was failing) going. These experiences have caused me to save and invest more conservatively as an adult.
