Great article Richard. I have been offering workshops in this area for quite some time and this question comes up often. If you'd like a free chapter from my eBook, check out the site howtheinvestmentbusinessreallyworks.com

Dividends4Life, I've yet to buy ETFs, although I'm considering converting my Emerging Market Index fund at Vangaurd to its ETF equivalent.

I think a more appropriate name for this piece would have been ETF's vs Vanguard funds. I think many investors are aware it's a toss up between the two when it comes to cost.

But what's more important is that, investors with high expense mutual funds (outside of Vanguard and a handful of others), are made aware of the true cost efficiencies associated with ETF's, in comparison to their (hidden) fee laden funds.

I think option three is the best way to go but it really depends on what you're investing for. As primarily a Roth IRA investor, I have a Scottrade account to hold my one stock (Berkshire Hathaway) and then the rest of my money goes to Vanguard, since all I want is index funds.

If you invest on a regular schedule I see no reason to invest in ETFs over index/mutual funds. Why pay the purchase fee every time you want to invest? It only discourages dollar-cost averaging.

When ETFs first came out I was enamored with them, "Wow, I can invest in a basket of stocks in the EXACT sector I want."

So it does have that going for it.

Thank you for posting this. I think there's a lot of confusion between these two types of investments and you helped clear it up.

People forget that investing is a personal issue and that there are distinct personal factors that must be considered.

There is no "one size fits all" investing strategy!
