R Arnold: The FTSE All-World Index series is widely followed and quite good for this purpose. It covers large-cap and mid-cap stocks globally, free-float and weighted according to market capitalization.

Hopefully as the Total World Stock Index Fund grows in assets, Vanguard will soon transition it to the FTSE Global All Cap Index, which would cover small-cap as well. They allowed for this in the fund's registration statement -- I just hope they do it sooner rather than later.

Very cool. I think I will look into this. I like your balanced portfolio plan - very simple and easy to maintain. (I prefer to find ways to maximize income and reduce spending. I should probably learn more about the investing portion). :)
