Personally I never invest in mutual funds. ETFs and individual stocks work better for me. But for those who choose Mutual Funds you have provided a great checklist and guidance for critical research.

Good advice. I like ETFs as an alternative as well. They generally have significantly lower fees than even the cheapest index funds and statistics show that managed funds usually underperform the indexes. Thus, why pay a fund company .5% per year when you can pay an ETF company .05% per year for the same performance? Moreover, ETFs are closed-ended, which means you can buy and sell them throughout the day just like a stock.

I think the advice given is solid and good. One can get to pretty good funds using this approach. However, my partner and I think we have a better way. We have developed a tool that allows one to evaluate funds quickly, sorting those with good investment decision makers. These decision makers can be individuals or the entire organization.

Good advice here. This will really sort out the bad funds quickly. I personally like to use fund picks from fidelity that are not Fidelity funds.
