First, as a cancer survivor myself, I strongly recommend: get health insurance! I was diagnosed at age 52, so you never know when it will hit you.
Another thing we need to start considering are all our Digital Assets. This is a new area but growing in importance. There is a new service that can help manage many of the tasks associated with wills and inheritances automatically and in a timely fashion. It is called E-Z-Safe where you can store instructions and copies of important documents such as: will, insurance policies, medical information, deeds, securities and more. What is important with this specific service is that you can have it monitor your condition automatically and also disseminate all the required information automatically to your designated people. It is part of managing your Digital Assets or Digital Estate Planning.

"I chose not to get COBRA after my separation from employer due to the outrageous expense of the plan"

A lot of people seem shocked by the cost of COBRA.
The cost of COBRA is legally no more than 102% of the actual cost of the insurance as paid by the employer. COBRA is expensive because the insurance is expensive.

My wife and I have gotten insurance through eHealthInsurance.com two different times in the past. They were a pleasant experience to work with both times.

I have a history of back problems and the first time I was ever in a position to not have health insurance, I did not realize how it would impact me. I chose not to get COBRA after my separation from employer due to the outrageous expense of the plan (more than I made at the time). I had no problems during this separation, so I thought "No Problems!".

Then 5 months into my new job, I twisted my back and went to a chiropractor. The next thing I know, the insurance company is stating that they are not responsible for pre-existing conditions and deny payment. They stated that I would have to be covered by their insurance for 18 months before they would begin covering any problem I may have had prior to getting insurance with them.

The reason for this is some strange clause that seems to be in a lot of insurance policies. If you have had a "GAP" in insurance coverage, then they are able to easily deny claims for anything they can prove has occurred to you prior to being on their insurance. If you did not have this "GAP" then they are obligated by law to cover all conditions (At least that is what I was lead to believe IANAL). So if you have any condition that is recurring or chronic, you will want to make sure never to allow your insurance to "GAP".

During any situation where we have been unable to get insurance through an employer or while unemployed, we have always picked up a "catastrophic" style plan to prevent any gaps.

In my experience reasonable rates for good coverage that covers typical doctors trips would be around $750-850 for a couple.

Good luck on your business! I know my wife and I are trying to devise a method to stop going to work for someone else every day. We are trying to follow some of Tim Ferris's advice and develop an original product that we may be able to have manufactured and provided in a manner that allows us to be "Owners" and not "Managers".
