Recently I applied for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express. For new cardholders, you can earn up to 30,000 bonus Starpoints, which was the primary reason I got the card. It’s also why the card is considered by many as one of the best travel credit cards.
So it caught my attention when SPG recently announced some nice enhancements to the program that officially began on March 1. Many of these enhancements are designed for frequent travelers. If you spend more than 50 nights on the road each year. the benefits really start to kick in. But there are also some nice perks for those of us who don’t travel as much.
Here are the details.
Improved Benefits for Gold and Platinum Members
There are some enhanced benefits for Gold and Platinum Members. You can think of these as little extra perks you receive just for carrying the card. As a refresher, here is what’s required to achieve each level of membership status:
Gold: Complete 10 stays or 25 nights in a calendar year.
Platinum: Complete 25 stays or 50 nights in a calendar year.
Once you reach either gold or platinum status, here are the enhanced rewards:
Gold members will receive a complimentary gift at check-in from the following options:
- Bonus Starpoints. Get 250 bonus Starpoints® per eligible stay at St. Regis®, Luxury Collection®, W®, Le Méridien®, Westin® and Sheraton® and 125 Starpoints per stay at AloftSM, ElementSM and Four Points® by Sheraton.
- In-Room Internet Access. Get free in-room Internet access for your entire stay.
- Complimentary Beverage. Get your favorite cocktail in the hotel’s restaurant or bar.
Platinum members will have the option of a complimentary breakfast as part of their welcome gift at check-in. Also, they’ll be able to choose from a local gift or bonus Starpoints.
Get More When You Spend More
As a way to keep their loyal customer’s happy, Starwoods is offering even more benefits to those that frequently stay at their locations. By frequently I mean, 50 or more stays a year at Starwood locations. The rewards you receive will all depend on how many nights you stay at a Starwood location. It’s pretty simple – the more you stay, the more you get.
SPG introduced a new loyalty tier for the devoted members, the SPG Lifetime. This gives guests who stay 250 total nights and who have maintained their elite status for five years, a lifetime of SPG Gold status. Those members who rack up a total of 500 stays and who have maintained their elite status for ten years, get the honor of SPG Platinum for life.
They also announced an addition to their check-in policy called the You24. This is for members who stay 75 nights (per year) at a Starwood hotel. They can now choose their own check-in and check-out time. Say for example, you get to your destination and check-in at 9pm, you won’t have to rush out of the room at 11am the next morning. The You24 will allow you to stay a full 24 hours which means you wouldn’t be required to check-out until 9pm.
