0% Balance Transfer for 15 Months

by DR

Most recently, Advanta was the only credit card issuers to offer a 0% balance transfer for 15 months. In June, however, Advanta stopped issuing credit cards and closed all open accounts. Having taken advantage of an Advanta 15-month transfer offer, I had my account closed, too.

If you are looking for the longest available 0% APR balance transfer, the Citi Premium Select is the card. It offers up to 12-Month 0% Balance Transfer, with no annual fee. Terms on the card can change frequently, so to get the latest terms, go to www.citi.com for more information on the card and to apply online. The Discover More Card also offers a good balance transfer/cash back combination.

Here are the top cards at a glance:

0% balance transfer
Discover More Card
0% BT and purchases
for up to 6 months +
Up to 5% Cash Back!
0% balance transfer offer
Citi Platinum Select
0% Balance Transfers and
0% on purchases
for up to 12 months

Great idea. Glad to see that Kiva is being endorsed by such a large financial player like MasterCard. Les and I went through a big analysis process comparing microloan sites like Prosper and Kiva, deciding to take the more charitable entrepreneurial route.

Why we closed prosper.com and opened kiva.org

We currently have two kiva loans and have created a similar feature to donate a percentage of our blog advertising income to charitable organizations like kiva.

Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten that I some money idle in my Kiva account that I could use to reinvest. My first experience was wonderful with Kiva and learned a lot by the process. Great to see a CC company behind this venture.

Do you know how MC or the government would treat the matching gift? Is it a gift from MC or from you?

DR August 15, 2008 at 6:05 am

I suspect that the matching gift to KIVA would be deemed as coming from MC, not the card holder.

I already have a business credit card with Advanta.
Could I still apply with Kiva?

Good for increasing awareness when someone asks what Kiva on your credit card means - helps to open a dialog.

I am interested in doing a balance transfer ($6189.00) and would like a card with 0% APR for 15 months, no annual fee and the least transfer fee possible.
What would the transfer fee be on the $6189.00?

DR November 4, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Norma, for the Advanta cards, including the Kiva card, the balance transfer fee is 3%, but it is capped at $90. So the transfer fee would be $90 on a transfer of $6,189.00. As always, though, make sure you review the terms and conditions of the offer before applying for the card. I hope this helps.

Since this is a charitable organization, would I be able to deduct the interest that I pay on the card each year as a donation on my taxes?

Where could I call to speak to someone regarding a balance transfer?Thank you!Jeff

DR December 12, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Jeff, if you click through to the application page, which takes you to Advanta’s website, you’ll see a 1-800 number you can call. It’s on the left sidebar. I’d list it here but I think it may vary based on your location and the number may change from time to time.
