Not true, while merchants may claim this, many merchants are already concentrated in their specific areas, many small business owners freely admit that they would not pass on savings to the consumer. Every group whether its the credit card companies or retailers have their special interests in mind, not necessarily the consumer's interest, in the case the merchants want the benefits and the business of credit card's but want the government to intervene so they can pay not as much.

ForumReader, I'm not sure why you think it's ridiculous that merchants would pass along some of the savings to consumers if they didn't pay interchange fees. That's not say they'd pass all the savings to consumers, but it certainly seems logical that competition would cause them to pass some of the savings on.

Not True Lisa, there is no guarantee that merchants will pay on interchange cuts to the consumer. That is a ridiculous statement, credit cards enable merchants to get more business that means they take them, and they pay a nominal fee to accept it. How about we take the credit cards away and the business get's less business.

Basically, the merchants want to reduce the cost of a using a service while getting all of the benefits of credit cards. Its almost like an electrical bill or tax, or even advertising, do you really think walmart will pass on the savings, many businesses freely admit they will pocket the savings.

While you're probably right about the paper statement fees, it is more secure to get your statements electronically. Ever since we had our mail stolen, I have switched all our statements to electronic. Plus it is better for the environment, even if that's not the real reason they charge the fee. Every little bit helps :)
