Updated: The Discover Open Road credit card is no longer available. It’s been replaced by the Discover it Credit Card.
Why is it that gas prices drive us crazy? Perhaps it’s because we are reminded of the price per gallon every time we pass a gas station. Whatever the reason, we hate to pay even a penny a gallon more than we have to. And that’s what prompted this review of the Discover® Open Road Card.
2% Cash Back on Gas
The Discover Open Road card is designed for those looking for extra cash back from gas and restaurant purchases. The card offers 2% cash back on the first $250 of gas and restaurant purchases each billing cycle. At one point, that was the only cash reward that the card offers. But today it also offers up to 1% cash back on all purchases. Here are the rewards details:
- 2% cash back on gas and restaurant purchases (up to $250 spent each billing cycle)
- 1% cash back on all other purchases (after $3,000 is spent annually)
- 0.25% cash back on all other purchases (before $3,000 is spent annually)
0% Introductory Rates
One of the lessor known benefits of this card is its no interest offer. All cardholders will receive a 12 month 0% intro APR on purchases and an 12 month 0% intro APR on balance transfers, which includes a 3% balance transfer fee.
Now this is not the best no interest offer available. Today you can get 0% for 18 months from several cards, including a special version of the Discover More Card. So if the introductory rate is your primary consideration, this card is not for you. But it’s a nice extra feature when combined with the cash back on gas purchases. The Discover Open Road Card reverts to an 10.99% - 20.99%* (Variable) APR after the intro period has expired.
Other Card Perks
There are several other perks that the Discover Open Road Card offers:
No Annual Fee: Unlike some other cards that offer increased cash back rewards, this card does not charge an annual fee.
5% to 20% Cash Back: As with all Discover credit cards, cardholders can earn 5% to 20% cash back on purchases made through Discover’s Online Mall.
Statement Credit: A nice feature is that you can use your cash back rewards to pay your credit card bill. And it only takes a few clicks of a mouse to do so, or to ask Discover for a check.
For a card with no annual fee, the Discover Open Road credit card is hard to beat for its gas and restaurant cash back rewards. A top competitor to this card is the American Express Blue Cash Everyday card, a version of which offers 3% cash back on gas purchases. The Amex card, however, comes with an annual fee.
