Thanks for this post -- most people don't understand the fine print, so I'm always happy to see this broken down. I'm also very interested to see if the Credit Cardholder Bill of Rights act passes -- if so, I hope they make the fine print more easily understandable for regular folks. Some lawyers can't even understand credit card fine print.

This is a really good article. It is SO important to read that fine print. I've been guilty of it myself, and while I lived to tell the tale, I came out pretty beaten up!

Interest rates can be upped for so many things - late payments, going over the limit, even using the card during a balance transfer period. You laid it out really well here. Excellent resounce.

I've used a balance transfer to pay a home equity, and the credit card company treated it as a balance transfer. You should confirm this with the card company, however, before making the transfer.

I believe when you make a payment on a HELOC using a credit card it is considered a balance transfer. So the transfer fee will apply.

Great post, but it made me think of a question. If I get a 0% card and use it to make a payment on a HELOC, will that be considered a balance transfer or a purchase? Anyone?

Excellent post. I could have used this when I was going over that credit card fine print. Though the Schumer box came in very handy. And I had already assumed any primacy of low interest, though that's not a concern with this card, since I don't have any special rate options and I won't be using it for the more expensive things like advances.

Thanks for going over all that. :)
