Citi Platinum Select Visa Review

Citi Platinum Select Visa BigThe Citi® Platinum Select® Visa® is the workhorse among Citi credit cards. It doesn’t come with a lot of glitter; it just gets the job done. With a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months on balance transfers* months and on purchases for 18 months on balance transfers* months, the Citi Platinum Select Visa is one of the highest rated credit card offers available.  I’ve carried the Citi Platinum Select Visa now for almost 20 years. I applied for the card when I opened a Citi bank account right after college, and have used the card continuously ever since. There are several reasons why the Citi Platinum Select Visa is a top rated card.

0% Intro APR

The Citi® Platinum Select® Visa’s® primary benefit is its 0% intro APR. It offers an introductory 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months on balance transfers* months and purchases for 18 months on balance transfers* months. Having carried the card for a long time, I can tell you that the balance transfer offers do not stop after this introductory period. Citi regularly sends out new balance transfer offers to its customers. In fact, recently Citi started a program whereby you can select the length of the balance transfer offer, the interest rate on the offer, and the balance transfer fee.

Good Credit

The Citi Platinum Select Visa is for those with good to excellent credit. Other credit cards offering similar features require excellent credit to qualify. By requiring good credit, this card is available to a lot of consumers.

Other Benefits

The Citi® Platinum Select® Visa® does provide several platinum cardholder benefits that include auto rental insurance and fraud protection services. However, there are no extraordinary benefits or services specifically available to cardholders in comparison to some other platinum credit cards.

  • Various Internet account related services.
  • Reports to all major credit bureaus to help you establish your credit history.
  • Citi Identity Theft Solutions.
  • $0 liability on unauthorized purchases.
  • Secure, free online account management.
  • Auto rental insurance.
  • Fraud and security protection services.
  • Lost wallet service.
  • Lost and stolen card reporting.
  • Emergency card replacement.
  • Emergency cash replacement.
  • Optional personal photo on card.
  • Various travel and emergency assistance services.
  • Medical referral services.
  • Legal referral services.
  • See website for additional benefits.

I have 2 other cards that I owe about $13,000 on and am wondering if I can transfer to my Citicard. My credit is good.

Sue, if you already have a Citi credit card, then the 9-month balance transfer offer described above wouldn’t apply. It only applies to new accounts. However, as a long time Citi customer, I know that the regularly send out special balance transfer offers to existing customers. In fact, I received two just this month. You could always call Citi to find out what offers are available. If you don’t have the Citi Platinum Select, then you can set up these balance transfers as part of your application. Subject to the credit limit they give you, you could transfer the $13,000 over to the Citi card at 0% interest for 9 months. Keep in mind that there is a 3% balance transfer fee. You can check out the official Citi online application here.

Update: As you can see above, Citi has just increased its 0% offer to up to 15 months on both balance transfers and purchases. It’s now the longest 0% offer available anywhere.

I transferred balances to my citicard and they gave me a $6000 credit limit. I transferred over $2600. I was paying my bill every month on time and they notified me they were lowering my credit limit to only $67 more than what I owe! So it looks like I maxed out my card! I do not trust this company and am currently applying for a loan in order to pay this card (and a few others) off. I have been reading on consumer affairs and better business bureau websites that other credit card companies are doing the same thing. They lure you in by promising zero percent on balance transfers for 6 months and then screw you over by taking away the credit limit they originally gave you! I can’t wait to pay off this card and then close the account. These companies are scavengers feeding off the people they supposedly offer to help. I work hard to maintain good credit and then citibank comes along and screws it up!

I agree with the above comment. Citibank did absolutely nothing for me even when I stated I was having a hard time paying bills. I had this card since I was 19, I am 32 now and can’t even imagine how much money they made off of me. Thank goodness I was able to finally pay off the balance. I will never apply for another citbank card ever again.

Terrible company to deal with. I have excellent credit and never pay my bills late, yet they have pushed my APR to 30%. I am close to paying off my accounts and then I will never deal with Citibank again. They lost billions in bad loans so they punish their good customers. If your a shareholder you should bail out now, most good customers will eventually leave Citibank.

Citi MC Platinum!! Under the new Obama plan this year, they hiked my interest rate to 22%. I have just about paid it off now, and then I’m going to close it for good. I was a great customer, too, very conscientious.

Citi Platinum Select MasterCard
Unethical practice
Provide high credit limits waits for you balance to go up and then the interest rate goes from 14% to 29.990%. My credit score is 780! When you call to address the issue, the agents you get can’t do anything. They say “wait two weeks and we will send you are response”. Nothing ever comes. Great stall tactics. I asked for a supervisor and asked why this was done, I was told “it is our banks practice and I don’t have the specific reason”. When asked who could tell me? “No one that I know of”
When I asked the supervisor to lower my interest rate after 9 years of perfect payment, I was given a rate the “she was authorized” that was 22%+

Where are our Senators and Congressmen? We bailed this company out!
Stay away from Citi. Don’t be their next victim!

They also have a $100 bonus after the first $799 in purchases in 3 months that is going on until the 15th of Jan…It’s somewhat similar to the Chase Freedom and Discover More offer but they still have the 0% APR 21 month balance transfer feature which neither Discover nor Chase offer.
